Some particular Romanian cheese
May 23, 2008
I was in Bucharest/Romania for 3 days. Obviously, I couldn’t keep myself too far away from a food store or from my parents fridge, as they always keep some good food stuff in there.
So, from the food store I bought “cașcaval afumat împletit” (3,20 euro = 500 grams) - a braided smoked kashkaval. And from my parents fridge I “borrowed” a very traditional cheese from Romanian mountains, “Brînză de burduf în coajă de brad” - a pungent cheese cured in fir tree bark (the most common kind is cured in the cow’s stomach). It’s always made by the mountains village people, in Rucar-Bran-Dambovicioara area (near Brasov). From the same area, via my parents fridge, I have “caș afumat” - a smoked cheese that is somewhat similar to ricotta afumicata and is another very special mountain cheese.
So, all this special stuff is in our Dublin fridge, now. Every morning, piece by piece, the Romanian cheeses have started to disappear in my stomach. Yummmy!
