Romanian Easter Food - Simple Facts

Date April 23, 2008

2320003784_44b6cd8996_m.jpgRomania is a Christian Orthodox country, so, our Easter comes for us this year on Sunday - April 27.

Lamb (or spring lamb as I’ve noticed that is well-known in Ireland, or “miel” - in Romanian) is the center of the Romanian Easter food. Oven-cooked spring lamb, grilled lamb, some black pudding from spring lamb, a sour soup made from lamb entrails, cut bowels and the head of the lamb, etc.

We also have some other quality special pastries: “cozonac” (a sweet bread, with sugar, eggs, milk, butter, cocoa, nuts or Turkish delight) and “pască” (a kind of pie with cottage cheese, milk, eggs and raisins).

ouarosii.jpgFinally, another “masterpiece” of Romanian Easter meal consists in “colored boiled eggs” - “ouă roșii”. Traditionally, red is the main color we use for coloring the eggs, but it’s ok to use also yellow, blue or green colors.

Don’t forget also another “masterpiece” for the Romanians during the Easter: the red wine! :)

and another one: the “drob”; I don’t know how to translate in English

I think “Stuffed Caul Fat” is the approximate translation

Drob is not black pudding if that’s what you meant. Black pudding contains blood and oats/barley/sweet potato, which drob doesn’t. I would say it is a cross between a meatloaf and black/white pudding but without the oats or bread involved in the sausage and using minced(?) offal (with herbs, onion) stuffed in a caul fat (as gugutza says).
btw, do you like black pudding or the similar thing they have in Spain called morcilla? I think lots of people don’t even without knowing that it has blood in it. If you want to try in Ireland (assuming it is similar to the UK), buy from a small producer shop/deli rather than the supermarket where it tends to be fattier and less tasty. Price is also an indication of quality…

I just tried the white pudding one, yesterday. Pretty ok. It’s true that it was from a supermarket…..
I’m not, anyway, a huge fan of romanian “drob”.

in my opinion Romanian “drob” is one of the best Easter meal (if it is cooked by a professional)
